Passports are mandatory for entry/exit of Canada/USA - As of June 1, 2009. Children under the age of 16 will not require passports but just a certified birth certificate. Anyone ages 16 and over will require passports.
Each person of legal age may bring:
Tobacco - 1 carton of cigarettes OR 50 cigars OR 1 lb of Tobacco (1 Roll of tobacco)
Alcohol - 40 oz. of wine or liquor OR 1 case of beer (24 cans)
Bait - Night crawlers packed in artificial bedding only, not dirt. Leeches & Minnows cannot be transported across the border; salted, frozen or otherwise.
No Handguns, Radar Detectors or Pepper Spray will be allowed into Canada.
You can transport enough groceries across the border equivalent with the length of your stay. The only grocery item you cannot bring across is Raw Potatoes.
Keep it simple. Answer all questions that the border agent asks you. If you cut down on any idle conversation, the process will go much quicker. Roll down all windows, have all identification ready for them, take off all sunglasses.
